The Healing Power of Music 🎵❤️🩹

Let’s talk about the healing power of music for a moment…
For most of my life, music has been essential—it's how I relax, connect, heal and express myself.
But for a loooooong stretch of time, I couldn’t listen to any music at all.
Zero. Nada.
It was heart breaking.
After a brain injury, all music triggered me into instant migraine-style headaches, dizziness, and a sea of nausea. It came with an uncontrollable fatigue so intense, I would trip while walking.
My senses were so heightened, I could hear every single layer of sound in any song— and instead of calm ambient music, it felt like it was screaming into my ears.
My whole body was stuck in survival mode,
and music, which once felt like medicine,
suddenly became grating.
Even grocery store music gave me headaches. Geez right? Imagine elevator music making you lose your mind.
Car radios were off-limits.
Everything had to be silent.
Except… for one song.
There was one track that
for whatever magical reason
didn’t cause symptoms.
I clung to it. Played it on repeat
Yes, that was my one song for about a year.
Eventually, after many months of painfully slow recovery,
my body began to heal
and with that healing came the slow return of music.
At first it was just that one song
then another
then a playlist at very low volume
Now, I can finally enjoy music again—
and let me tell you, it feels like a friggin miracle!
I still can’t handle as much dwarf metal as I’d like 😂 but music is slowly returning to my life.
Here are some of my faves:
🎷 Hank Mobley at dinner
🍻 Medieval tavern music during D&D
🎶 Vinyl spins of Dire Straits and Brian Eno Thursday Afternoon
🧘♀️ Daily Meditations with Kip Mazuy
💃 Dancing to Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra (thx to Guardians of the Galaxy for resurrecting a lot of gems)
🧹 Cleaning to My Lady Jane soundtrack (an amusing, ridiculous show that I shouldn't like but LOVE)
😴 Chilling to Khruangbin
🤩 My own partners AMAZING ambient music: InnerSoundScapes on Spotify
Music is back
And I don’t take it for granted
As someone who also plays sound healing professionally,
the irony isn’t lost on me
I couldn’t even listen to the healing frequencies I was used to offering others.
Getting to play again feels like another kind of homecoming.
Music really is medicine.
